Thirsty Thursday: Avocado Milkshakes

We are barely a week into the 2016! How are everyone’s workout and weight loss goals coming? Losing weight is a huge challenge, but for some gaining weight is a predicament too. I know it seems like a good problem to have. When I know someone who needs to gain a few pounds (like my middle guy after the worst stomach bug of all time), the answer is usually a few milkshakes. However, there’s only so many chocolate milkshakes one can drink, and it is sometimes more wholesome and gratifying to put in something healthy.

My sister in law, Kate, from Southern California who has a deeper love for avocados than I do for Harry Potter had just the solution for me. She told me about Avocado Milkshakes. I thanked her profusely, and did a little research. There are several ways to make them, and countries like Brazil, Vietnam, and even the U.S. have their own varieties.

Avocado Shakes 6

I whipped up one with a little vanilla extract for my vanilla loving son, and everyone else seemed to enjoy it too. This has become a great after school treat!

Avocado Shakes 8

Avocado Milkshake (makes 1 huge shake with three straws or three small)

1 large ripe Haas avocado, peeled and seeded

1/3 of a cup sweetened condensed milk

1 cup milk (I used whole milk for my kids)

2 tsp pure vanilla extract

lots of ice

Avocado Shakes 1

In a blender, add ingredients.

Avocado Shakes 2

Blend until desired consistency. Pro Tip: For smoother consistency add a bit more milk. For sweeter flavor add a bit more condensed milk.

Enjoy immediately!

What is your favorite flavor milkshake? Chocolate? Vanilla? Would you consider adding avocado?

Thirsty Thursday: Pure Vanilla Shake

This weekend kicks off the unofficial start to summer! Can you believe it?! Even though school is still in session, we have already started doing some things you can only do in the summer time. We have been playing in the water table, staying up a little later, playing lots of catch outside, and enjoying our favorite frozen treats.

The kids are currently on a vanilla milkshake kick, and while I appreciate the ease of dumping vanilla ice cream and milk into a blender, my oldest complained that it doesn’t taste like a vanilla cupcake. I agreed, it just isn’t vanilla-y (is that a word?) enough. So this week for THIRSTY THURSDAY, I made it my mission to fix this problem!

I played around in the kitchen. I don’t know if you all remember my hot vanilla from the winter (I know we are all trying to block out winter), but I tried a few tricks from that creation, and I think I have found the perfect recipe for a PURE VANILLA MILKSHAKE! (NOTE: A good grown-up version might be to add a shot of vanilla vodka! YUM!)

PURE VANILLA MILKSHAKE (makes two large shakes)
2 cups vanilla ice cream
2 cups cold milk (I used 2%)
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 Tbs sugar
1 pinch cinnamon
whipped cream for garnish

In a blender, add ingredients and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and garnish with whipped cream.

What is your favorite summer frozen treat?

Thirsty Thursday: Oreo Shake

Whether it be hot vanilla, salted caramel hot cocoa, or even a windy whiskey mac, it is still frigid here in the midwest. So, this week I kind of took on a “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” mentality. I am never going to be able to beat this cold no matter how many pairs of cuddle duds I wear to the bus stop.

This week’s Thirsty Thursday is one of my favorite milkshakes, and they are so easy to make. The first time I had an Oreo Milkshake was about 15 years ago. My niece and I were trying to make Oreo Blizzards just like Dairy Queen. Our attempt at a blizzard was a fail, but we added a little milk and made the most delicious milkshakes we had ever had. Since then, they have become a favorite treat.
Oreo Milkshakes (makes 2 small milkshakes)
4 oreo cookies
4 scoops vanilla ice cream
1/2 cup of milk
In a blender, add ingredients and blend until smooth. (NOTE: If milkshake is too thick add another splash of milk). Pour into a glass and enjoy!
You can even add a crumbled Oreo cookie to the top for a bit of garnish.
What are your coping mechanisms for this cold?

Thirsty Thursday: Pumpkin Pie Shake

Oh yeah! It’s Thirsty Thursday! We are all on antibiotics this week due to some illnesses that have been going around our house, so as much as I would love a cocktail at the end of this stressful week of sick kids and sick husband, that will have to wait until next week.

I have been craving a milkshake and the kids will never turn down an ice cream treat. However, rather than my my old standby, an old fashioned chocolate malt, I decided to put a nice fall twist on a milkshake and make a Pumpkin Pie Shake. Let’s face it, I am getting antsy for pumpkin pie, and I needed something to tie me over.

This time of year I have pumpkin in the house and I had a little bit leftover from some pumpkin donut holes I made (sharing the recipe soon).

Pumpkin Pie Shake (makes 1 large shake or 2 medium or 3 small)
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1 cup vanilla ice cream
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
pinch of  ground nutmeg
pinch of ground ginger
1/2 cup milk (I used 2%)
Whipped cream for garnish (optional)

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth and well incorporated.

So creamy and delicious! It will get you in the mood for Thanksgiving.

Thirsty Thursday: Old Fashioned Chocolate Malt

Happy THIRSTY THURSDAY, Readers! Today, I made something a little more old school. When I was a kid, there was nothing better than going out for burgers and my parents giving us the go ahead to order a shake.

My Dad would ALWAYS order a chocolate malt. He said it was his favorite when he was a kid and always made him think of childhood.
So, when I saw the container of Malted Milk at the store, I thought blending up some Chocolate Malts for Thirsty Thursday would be a great summertime drink. Some people don’t like the added calories of added malt to a shake, but it really does make the shake taste more chocolatey, and in moderation, it is a great treat!
Old Fashioned Chocolate Malt
2 – 3 scoops vanilla ice cream
2 Tbs Malted Milk
2 Tbs Chocolate Syrup
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 – 3/4 cup of milk
Put all the ingredients in the blender, and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass, and garnish with whipped cream.
