Thirsty Thursday: Apple Orchard Punch

This week has been incredibly busy and also fairly productive for all of us. Weeks like this call for a treat at the end of the week, and this week’s THIRSTY THURSDAY is the perfect treat for adults AND kids!

The weather here has been gorgeous and unseasonably warm, so as much as I cannot wait to make some hot apple cider or some cool hot cocoa recipes, it just isn’t time. However, when I saw this recipe on allrecipes.com, I was thrilled that there was a refreshing beverage for this time of year.

Apple Orchard Punch

1 32 oz bottle of apple juice
1 12 oz can of frozen cranberry juice
1 cup orange juice
2 liters ginger ale (or sparkling wine for the grownups)
1 apple or pear

In a large punch bowl or pitcher mix ingredients. Garnish with apple slices.

I served this wonderful punch in Mason jars with lots of ice on the back patio, soaking in the last of this warm weather. The kids LOVE it! I cannot wait to surprise them with some on Friday after school, maybe with a pumpkin cookie to celebrate all we accomplished this week!

Thirsty Thursday: Manny’s Salted Chocolate Milk

Welcome to the best part of the week, Readers! THIRSTY THURSDAY!!

I love television. I don’t watch nearly as much as I used to. However, this time of year, I still get a little giddy about premiers of my favorite shows (did anyone watch New Girl the other night?). I am a sitcom-aholic (comedy is kind of my thing, yo). I also love that now I’m going to school at Second City, sometimes sitcom watching is part of my homework.

One of my favorite shows is Modern Family. My hubby and I cannot wait to get the kids in bed on Wednesday nights so we can kick back relax and watch a half hour of ridiculousness (in a good way). Since next Wednesday is the premier, I thought it was time to have a tribute to one of my favorite sitcoms, and I attempted Manny’s Salted Chocolate Milk.

We are big chocolate milk drinkers in this house. Chocolate milk to my kids is like my morning coffee. They love to have a cup with breakfast and get the day going.

Manny’s Salted Chocolate Milk
8 oz ice cold milk
1 – 2 Tbs Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup
pinch of Kosher salt

In a large class stir milk, syrup, and salt vigorously until well combined.

I was not expecting that much of a difference compared to regular chocolate milk, but it really was better. Amazing what a pinch of salt can do (a swirly straw makes everything taste better too). Thanks for the tip, Manny!
What is your favorite sitcom?

Thirsty Thursday: Plum and Rum Cocktail

HAPPY THIRSTY THURSDAY!

I was thinking with the three day weekend coming up there are few things that are better than a three day weekend, but I’ve decided this cocktail is almost as good.

To me, the unofficial end to summer means a few things: festivals, relaxing, last visit to the splash pad, one last bon fire with the kids, and stone fruit. This time of year we are buying up plums, nectarines, peaches and cherries and eating them up any way we can before they are officially out of season.

I thought something with plums would be delicious. So, I came up with a little something.

Plum and Rum Cocktail
1 medium sized ripe plum sliced
1 Tbs extra fine sugar
2 oz of light lemon rum (I used Bacardi Limon)
5 oz tonic water or club soda
Ice

Fill a cocktail glass with ice and set aside. Then, in a shaker muddle together sugar and plum until plum is completely mashed. Then add the rum and ice and shake for about 1 minute until well incorporated.

Strain into cocktail glass.

Finish with tonic water.

Enjoy the end of summer with this wonderful cocktail!

Thirsty Thursday: Nectarine Green Iced Tea

End of summer is upon us, so this installment of THIRSTY THURSDAY will feature one of mine and the kids favorite fruits: nectarines.

I have mentioned before that I am a tea drinker, but in the summer I don’t do hot beverages. I can often be see with an Arnold Palmer in my hand in the summer, but instead of mixing iced tea with lemonade I thought it might be fun to add a different fruit. Also, I instead of black tea, I used my favorite Green Tea.

This recipe is great because the tea is decaffeinated so the kids can have a few sips. Also, it is refreshing and is a great way to celebrate the end of summer.

Nectarine Green Iced Tea
4 Green Tea Bags
4 cups hot water
2 cups cold water
1 cup simple syrup (1 cup sugar and 1 cup water simmered on stove until sugar dissolves then cooled)
1 large or 2 medium nectarines pureed

In a large pitcher add ice and nectarine puree. Then, in a separate container steep tea bags in the hot water for about 4 or 5 minutes.

When the tea is done, add the tea, cold water and simple syrup to the ice and puree mixture and mix thoroughly.

Garnish with slices of nectarine and serve.

Thirsty Thursday: Cherry Rum and Coke

HAPPY THIRSTY THURSDAY, READERS!!!

Today is the best day of the week! Let me tell you, this week has been a teensy bit stressful trying to get ready for next week, and as I have shared with you earlier this week, I am in the middle of an organizational freak out, that I am sure will continue through the weekend (I just said week a lot).

However, I’m having gal pals over tonight, and I have planned to make my favorite cocktails for them. Cherry Rum and Cokes.

I love cherry pop. It is my pop of choice. I prefer it over regular pop, and I try to have it in the house. I like cherry Coke, cherry Pepsi, anything. In fact, last year at this time I shared a recipe for cherry pop brownies.

A few months ago, my sister showed me this:

She knows my affinity for cherry pop, and thought I would like some rum and cokes made with this awesome rum.

She was right!

Cherry Rum and Cokes
2 oz. Cruzan Black Cherry Rum
12 oz. Cola
Lots of Ice
Maraschino Cherries for garnish

Fill a large glass to the brim with ice. Add rum and then slowly add pop. Stir gently. Add cherries for garnish.

This cocktail is easy, delicious, and a great way to relax with my girlfriends.

Thirsty Thursday: Orange Cranberry Coolers

HAPPY THIRSTY THURSDAY!
We only have a few weeks of summer left, so I know that my carefree mornings with the kids are very soon going to come to a close. Once school starts, I know there will be quick breakfasts and running out the door, so I thought I would try and take advantage of these mornings with fun breakfasts and taking some extra time for a treat.
The kids LOVE slushies. I have to say though I am a little skeptical of store bought slushies. So, I have decided to make my own with juice. I have done all kinds this summer, watermelon juice coolers, orange juice coolers, fruit punch coolers, but I think their favorite is orange cranberry coolers.
This is a simple recipe and a great combination of flavors. In fact, my Mom would often put together orange and cranberry juice for us when we would feel a cold coming on.
Orange Cranberry Coolers
1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1 cup cranberry juice (Ocean Spray 100% Cranberry Juice)
Ice
Add ice to the blender (about 1 or 2 cups). Next, add juices.
Finally, pule blend until desired consistency.
Serve!
For an adult version of this drink perhaps a smidge of vodka would be in order.

Thirsty Thursday: Old Fashioned Chocolate Malt

Happy THIRSTY THURSDAY, Readers! Today, I made something a little more old school. When I was a kid, there was nothing better than going out for burgers and my parents giving us the go ahead to order a shake.

My Dad would ALWAYS order a chocolate malt. He said it was his favorite when he was a kid and always made him think of childhood.
So, when I saw the container of Malted Milk at the store, I thought blending up some Chocolate Malts for Thirsty Thursday would be a great summertime drink. Some people don’t like the added calories of added malt to a shake, but it really does make the shake taste more chocolatey, and in moderation, it is a great treat!
Old Fashioned Chocolate Malt
2 – 3 scoops vanilla ice cream
2 Tbs Malted Milk
2 Tbs Chocolate Syrup
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 – 3/4 cup of milk
Put all the ingredients in the blender, and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass, and garnish with whipped cream.

Thirsty Thursday: Carmel Iced Coffee

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

It’s time for THIRSTY THURSDAY!!!

The past few weeks have been so busy, not only because of house craziness, but the kids are so active in soccer, baseball, swimming, and then add in a few playdates, and we are exhausted. The kids have been taking afternoon naps, and while admittedly sometimes I join them, other times I have to fold laundry or do a project. So, that is when I whip up an afternoon pick me up.

In the summer months it is hard to wrap my head around drinking a cup of hot green tea. While that is my normal pick me up, lately, it is just too hot. I found these little packets by Starbucks that are made for cold brewing, but you could of course chill some hot coffee too.

This recipe is simple is much less expensive and has fewer calories than pulling through a drive through. Also, you can put this in your favorite travel cup, which is much more kind to the environment.

Carmel Iced Coffee
1 packet of Starbucks via iced plain iced coffee (prepared with water)
OR 16 oz brewed coffee cooled
1 Tbs Carmel Syrup
1/2 cup of milk (Skim or 2% to keep the calories low)
Lots of ice

First, pour coffee into cup and mix with carmel syrup. Add ice. Finally, over ice pour milk and gently stir.

I will then take this tasty drink outside in this gorgeous weather and get home work done. Sometimes I weed the garden, make my phone calls, or do paperwork. Between the fresh air and a little zip of caffeine, I am as refreshed as the kids when they wake up from naps.

Thirsty Thursday: Champagne Punch

Time for the latest installment of THIRSTY THURSDAY!

One of my favorite places to be in the summertime is on our back patio watching the sprinklers water our vegetable garden. The kids are in bed sufficiently exhausted from a day of summer activities, and Brian and I just get to sit for a moment and enjoy some quiet. Just a few minutes of peace before we get back to work inside.
Lately, I have been thinking a little cocktail in our hands at this time of night would be nice. Something light, and perhaps with a little fizzle (fo shizzle).
I found THIS!
Photo courtesy of Martha Stewart Living
First off, it is Martha Stewart, so its going to be delish. Secondly, it has all the requirements for a summer cocktail (well, in my mind anyway): fruit, sweet, fizzle, and crispness.
I cut the recipe in half, and it was plenty for Brian and I. Also, I did not used some sparkling white wine we had (instead of real champagne). The recipe is very simple. there were no complaints.
Our nights on the patio just got a little more relaxing. Cheers!

Thirsty Thursday: Peachberry Smoothies

It’s that time of the week again. The most wonderful time of the week if you ask me! THIRSTY THURSDAY!

I have been on a smoothie kick lately. In the summer, it just seems so much easier to throw a bunch of fresh fruit and ice in a blender and head out the door to enjoy the gorgeous weather.
I came up with this smoothie when I saw all the beautiful peaches and raspberries that are currently in season.
Peachberry Smoothie
2 large peaches diced into small chunks
1 cup fresh raspberries
1 cup vanilla almond milk
ice
In a blender add peaches, raspberries and almond milk until smooth. Then, add ice and blend until desired consistency (about 1 minute). Put in your favorite glass and enjoy.
(NOTE: If this smoothie is a little tart you can add some stevia or a tsp of sugar to sweeten.)

This has served as an tasty and healthy breakfast for me as I cart everyone around to various camps, after a long run, or while I am getting some work done. It is like summertime in a glass.
